“My name is Hrelli and I’ve come to make myself a permanent resident of your nightmares.”
Hrelli was born and raised in Punjar by a working class halfling family living in the New City. Her father (Badze Mahidji) was a brick maker but died in his middle age after succumbing to a lung ailment. As the family’s sole wage-earner, this event sent her remaining family, comprised of her mother and older sister, into poverty. After relocating to the Commons ward, the family’s outlook worsened. Hrelli’s mother, Lidda, became a house servant. Kharrisha, her sister, fared worse and was captured by illicit slavers. Hrelli felt vulnerable to the same forces that enslaved her sister and became wracked with fear.
Hrelli’s life path altered drastically following an episode where she was grabbed in the streets and narrowly escaped. She fled her ward and continued running until she left the city via the Salt Marsh Gate. She found a sort of perverted refuge in the midst of the Great Black Swamp. It is in the swamp that Hrelli came in contact with the yuan-ti. Amongst the yuan-ti, she was introduced to a powerful entity, that she refers to as The Pēdjwēdjinn [PEE∙jwee∙jin], that offered Hrelli that which she was completely desperate for—the ability to protect herself. And in return, she entered a dark pact with an eldritch essence more horrible than anything of this world.
Hrelli’s psyche is completely governed by fear. Her demeanor is often that of an abused animal. Her desire for self preservation trumps any empathy she has for those around her. Hrelli is a pawn in her masters’ games and will obediently follow their will. For her, there is never any sense of personal gain, just survival.
She is mostly quiet and certainly not personable. She can be very cooperative, but you’ll have the sense it is not by choice. She uses her sinister appearance and freakish nonverbal vocalizations to frighten potential foes and dissuade them from harming her. Fear is her currency and her affection is as false as a whore.
Other adjectives to describe her personality would be: defensive, spiteful, untrusting, fierce, secretive, and unsympathetic.
She wears a niqāb (Muslim veil) that covers her head, face, and neck. A multitude of necklaces cover her throat and chest. Her garments consist of a long, black leather shirt and a black leather jacket with strips instead of full sleeves. When in combat, she flips back the niqāb revealing several eyes drawn with black cosmetics on her forehead, cheeks, and eyelids. Her dark hair is gathered into spiky cones and dreadlocks. She has a simple wooden cudgel and a woodwind instrument that is carved to resemble a snake. She often carries a posy of dead flowers.
